New in my Kitchen #1

From time to time I am sent a new product to try or I stumble across something new myself. I thought I would take a few minutes to share my latest discoveries with you.

Sometimes I will like a product, sometimes I will love it and occasionally I will hate it. Do let me know if you have made any great new discoveries.

I really quite liked these. They are good quality chips as you would expect from Kettle, but I didn't feel they were anything extra special. My favourite flavours were the Sweet Chilli and the Cool Sour Cream. I didn't touch the sea salt as I cannot abide salted crisps (so boring!). I gave these to my friend Andrew who said they were better than standard tortilla chips as they weren't too salty and actually I thought the same about the other flavours. They weren't overpowering as some brands can be, so much more enjoyable.

Last week, I received a letterbox cake. I picked this rather charming cake. When it arrived and I opened it, I was a bit disappointed. It seemed so small! I was pleased with the illustration, as my cake had my name on it. After thinking about it logically I realised that it couldn't be any bigger and fit through a letterbox.

I selected the fruit cake (there is a choice of plain madeira, carrot cake, fruit cake, gluten & wheat free cake and double chocolate chip cake).

My score would have been 6/10, but after tasting it (very fruity and moist), I upped my score and decided I would rather like to receive one of these through the post as a gift. The company also sell bigger cakes, which they can also deliver.

I never get overexcited about ironing. In fact, Graham does most of our ironing, as it's something he is willing to do (so he says!) and when my mum comes over to look after Cooper, I usually come home to find she has done some too (mums are the best!).

When the steam elite arrived, I was amazed at the size of it, but it does pack a powerful steam punch. Much more steam than you could imagine, so it makes light work of the ironing and you don't need to exert much energy at all.  It also has a a huge water tank, which means you don't have to keep refilling it and it switches itself off. Graham has gone to work and left the iron on by accident on a few occasions, so for me this is a great feature.

On the down side, the steam cable gets hot and the whole unit is rather huge. I would heartily recommend it if you have the space. So for those of you with a utility room, I say buy it!

If you buy a unit before Thursday 1 November 2012, you can use the code BLOG2175 to receive £75 off the Power Steam Elite (42221) from the Morphy Richards website.

RRP  £169.99

Score 9/10 (if you don't mind the size)

I was sent a small block of this cheese to try for National Curry Week. I really wish they hadn't bothered! Some might enjoy it, but I think it's vile. On first bite the spices seem warming, but then the flavours change and it was almost like eating my spicy apple cake with an overpowering taste of cheese. The spices left a floral taste in my mouth. I really didn't like it at all. Such a shame for such a well respected brand that has some lovely cheeses. The fact we all have different tastes makes the world more interesting, but this cheese is really not for me.

5. Dominos Gourmet Range

Dominos asked me to review their new Gourmet Range. Now and again I do order pizza online and Dominos is my usual choice. I always think the sauce on Pizza Hut pizzas is like tomato puree used straight. Bleugh!

Anyway, out of the three Gourmet Range Pizzas, only one was veggie, the Florentine. The Florentine, has a sunblush tomato & garlic sauce, reduced fat mozzarella, Greek feta cheese, baby spinach and sunblush baby plum tomatoes. It they had added mushrooms to the pizza it would have been my ultimate pizza. I did enjoy it, but I like a lot of sauce on my pizza, so I could have done with more sauce.

ps my night shot of the pizza was so poor, I won't bother sharing it with you.

  1. I'm just jealous your husband does the ironing #wheredidIgowrong! Plus if anyone would like to send me one of those cakes I'd be very happy, love fruit cake! Did have some Brownies through the letter box by surprise the other day so think this is a lovely idea and much better than flowers! That cheese does sound foul I can just imagine the taste from your description. Camilla x

    1. Hey Camilla, brownies through the door do sound good and the cake was too. When I say he does the ironing, well it is rather infrequent :(

  2. Oh, I loathe ironing, too. That steamer is massive! If it truly makes the job go faster, though, it must be worth the extra space. The Letterbox Cake is also adorable - it's more like receiving a cupcake or one of those message cookies, though, right? It would have to be quite small!

These are fun products. I would, unfortunately, eat anything Kettle!

    1. The cake came in a lovely time that I will be able to keep and use again, so that was an added bonus.

I know what you mean about Kettle crisps :)

  4. Yes, I was impressed by the tin from Bakerdays cakes and I had the sponge cake and it was very moist and went a lot further than I thought it would. The steam iron looks awesome!
