The Breakfast Blues

I'm just not good at having breakfast in the morning!

I make sure I get up early enough to make Cooper a big bowl of porridge during the week and sometimes treat him to a cooked veggie breakfast at the weekend, but I just can't face food that early in the morning.

Water yes, food no!

It's not that I don't like breakfast, my favourites are:
  • beans on toast
  • crunchy nut cornflakes
  • a cooked veggie breakfast
  • tattie scones and beans
  • poached egg on toast
  • mushrooms on toast
  • greek yoghurt, fruit and honey
I just can't face it first thing in the morning.

I know! It's good for you. It sets you up for the day. People who eat breakfast are less likely to overeat later in the day. Hmmmmm! There may be something in that one.

Raspberry, Carrot & Basil Smoothie
What I have started to do is make a smoothie in my vitamix to take with me to drink at work.

My favourite this week has been a blueberry, apple and orange juice with added Baobab powder for extra nutrients and lots of ice to turn it into a more juice like texture.  I've had that one twice. Once I have poured two drinks for me, I add a banana, some greek yoghurt and milk, whizz it up again and pour that into a sealed cup for Cooper to take with him.

Juicing is big at my work just now, well at least in my department. My friend Louise started juicing about a month ago. She brings juice into work too and feels great on it. Her favourite juice has tomatoes and chilli in it. I'll have to ask her for the recipe. Then there is my friend Genna who writes over at Blethering Boys. She has really gone for it and is doing a full juice detox. She has lost weight, looks great and is bubbling over with energy, so I think for the moment I shall stick with my juices and let go of the no-breakfast guilt.

What is a weekday morning like in your house?

Does everyone eat breakfast?

While we are talking breakfasts. I have to tell you about one of my eBay Collections

In support of breakfasts everywhere I have created a board called The Breakfast Bunch were you will find lots of fun breakfast gadgets and kitchen fripperies.

I had such fun creating my 12 collections for eBay, I do hope you go over, have a look and follow any that catch your eye.

I even have a board called Food Styling Props that I created especially to tempt food bloggers.

  2. Thanks Karen. Oh that is a shame, you have a lot of lovely breakfast recipes as well.

  3. Smoothies sound a great way to start the day Jac, so don't think you need to feel bad. I love a good breakfast, but usually just have a slice of toast on the run. But at least it's a good homemade wholemeal rye sourdough slice ;-)

    1. Homemade wholemeal rye sourdough toast! Hmmmmmmmm! That sounds wonderful Choclette and now I am picturing a poached egg on top.

  4. Ha ha George Clooney please! I'm lucky my kids are very happy with porridge or Weetabix in the morning, which is easy enough and over the Easter hols they've been getting their own cereal with cold milk :-) Bonus for me!

    1. If only that was on the menu Ren LOL! If kids like porridge you are definitely onto a winner. That and being happy to drink water and you have cracked it. At least they start off the day well. Making their own? I shudder to think about Cooper making his own breakfast without supervision!

  5. I know what you mean about not being able to face breakfast sometimes.

I simply adore my Vitamix, and it means I can get a portion or two of vegetables in at breakfast time which has to be good!

    1. Definitely. I love mine too. There is no better gadget! And yes it is great for getting your fruit and veg quota. I just made Cooper and I a mango and banana smoothie a wee while ago, it was delish!

  6. Anymore, the only thing I really want is a big cup of milky tea, chocolate, or coffee... breakfast always looks better at about 10 a.m., but I must have milk or something to coat my stomach in the mornings now, so I'm still fiddling with shakes with added protein. So far, I keep managing to make them curdle, adding berries with things like yogurt -- so I shall have to fiddle some more, I'm afraid, but at least warmer weather is coming, and a smoothie won't make me cold!!

    1. I wonder why they are curdling. I don't have that problem when adding yoghurt. Is it maybe the type of yoghurt you are adding? And yes 10am is the perfect time for breakfast.

  7. A really informative posts you are just like my daughter she can't face food as soon as she gets up so when we go on holiday the breakfast goes to waste when its included in the room price!!!

  8. I'm not a breakfast person, but I'm not a juice person either! I do like yoghurt, but I'd rather have the thick kind with a little fresh fruit than have a smoothie. Coffee definitely works for me! LOTS of coffee. And, yes - breakfast at 10am - at the very earliest

    1. Maybe that is the best time for most people. Less rush and a more leisurely morning. Wish I liked coffee, I am sure my morning starts would be a bit easier.

  9. I am not a breakfast when I get up person either but have been trying to make myself have cereal and milk and this really does keep me full till nearly lunchtime at work. Think I shall have to try taking a smoothie with me!

    1. By the time I start having my smoothie I am really ready for something and I enjoy it so much. Really need to drink more water during the day though. I really don't drink enough.

  10. I usually have a bowl of special k. I take meds in the morning and if I don't take them with food I get really ill!

  11. I'm a massive breakfast fan, really enjoyed my red grapefruit this morning! Usually I'll have toast and Marmite but whenever I have extra time I like a good fry up. Favourites at the mo include veggie fry with halloumi in place of bacon, or 'posh potato waffles' with a fried egg and tomato/parsley salsa.

    1. I am not keen on grapefruit or marmite, but I am rather excited about the notion of Halloumi for breakfast.

  12. I make my own 'pancakes' every morning. I call them pancakes but they are more like a cross between a fritter and a pancake made with oatmeal, homemade yogurt and egg.

  13. I think my breakfast routine is kind of boring. I'm used to sandwiches so anything other than this is just not proper breakfast for me. My OH can eat scrambbled eggs every day, I hate them with passion but don't mind a good omlette ;)

    1. Isn't that funny when they are both eggs? We all have such different tastes :)

  14. I love the graphic. I struggle to eat breakfast most mornings because I struggle to get myself started in the mornings! I do usually eat after the school run. It's a lot quieter and calmer then. I love the Jordan's granola cereals!

    1. Me too, an extra hour in the morning would make all the difference.
