Peanut Butter, Nutella and Banana French Toast

A decadent peanut butter, nutella and banana fried sandwich that Elvis would have been delighted by.

Peanut Butter, Nutella and Banana French Toast

Peanut Butter, Nutella and Banana French Toast

This recipe is either going to horrify you or send you to heaven. Peanut butter, nutella and banana French toast sandwiches.

It's definitely a one-off kind of a lunch. One for a special treat that will cheer you up on a gloomy wet day.

I was inspired to make this after seeing Vanesther over at Bangers and Mash make some Banana Eggy Bread. I immediately started thinking about nutella oozing out and it did!

I tinkered with the recipe. Less egg for me and more filling. Oh boy did it hit the mark, but a little went a long way.

FRENCH TOAST

Now I have to ask you to keep this recipe quiet!

My husband and I have a long standing argument about French toast.

I think it should have salt in in, but my hubby insists it should be sugar.

This argument has been going on for over 20 years, yes I am that old!

So please keep this to yourself. He will just crow about it and I'll never hear the end of it. I still think French toast should have salt in it, but this sandwich is a different beast.

What would you put in a French toast sandwich?

Do you make French toast with sugar or salt?

  1. You hit the nail on the head with Elvis. He'd be all over this. ☺
I have to say - if you *don't* put salt in the eggs in which you fry the bread, it's flat. And sugar!!? For goodness sakes, that's sacrilege.

One more for your team, missus.

  2. Plain eggy bread should indeed have salt in it. That weird American habit of shaking icing sugar and drizzling syrup over sweet eggy bread is just not right...

But this is something else entirely and looks perfect. I've made pan toasties with banana, PB and nutella inside - butter on outside to go crunchy as it fries...

  4. Oh my lordy. I have more than a sneaky suspicion my kids and I would LOVE this for a lazy weekend brunch. I've only ever made the savoury eggy bread, and dipped in tommie sauce. But have been meaning to try a sweet one for ages. I too saw Vanesther's banana eggy bread recipe and yours takes it to a whole new level!!! God it looks good.

  5. I haven't made french toast for years but I do remember putting sugar and cinnamon in the batter. I'm not sure about this combo I must admit. Bananas OK but Nutella also. Hmmm. I'm going to have to make it this weekend and see. Will come back to you!

  6. Don't think I've ever added salt to my eggs to make eggy bread, but neither do I add sugar. However, these sandwiches look just divine. My kind of heaven.

    1. It is rather sinful Tina, just for a treat. Although it does contain eggs, banana and nuts, so not all bad ;)

  14. Normally I'm in the savoury eggy bread camp too, Jac. That's how my mum made it for us when we were little - loads of salt and pepper, yum! I'm not sure what possessed me quite to break with tradition and to experiment with banana sandwiches. Love the fact you've taken it to a whole other level with the Nutella AND peanut butter. My girls will go crazy for this!

  15. I'm more in the savoury camp too, but time and place and all that... Looks fabulous. I'm sure it tastes heavenly

  16. Arg these sound AMAZING!!!! They would be perfect for breakfast on valentines day, my partner loves peanut butter but I might skip that part and add more nutella for me :P

As for the whole sweet or savoury thing. I know I'm probably wrong but if its salty/savoury we call it eggy bread, if its sweet with sugar we call it french toast...makes the distinction a little easier :)

    Thanks for sharing!

    1. Ahhh yes, that is a good point. Might have that discussion with hubby and see if he sees the distinction.

  17. Oh boy, I want one of those Jac, bound to life anyone out of the gloom. I haven't made french toast in years, but I'm pretty sure sugar and cinnamon are included. Generally I'd prefer savoury, but your pictures have made me change my mind.

  20. It looks amazing - and I say that as someone who doesn't really like eggs or french toast - but goodness I would be in for a taste of this one and I suspect one mouthful would not be enough

  21. Oh god, these photos should come with a warning - they're indecent! I sooooooo want that piece with the nutella oozing out!

  22. Not really one for me but I do put a dash of salt and cinnamon in my French toast

  23. Wow, that looks so decadent and gorgeous. Look at that Nutella oozing out! I like classic eggy bread salted (or even spread with marmite). But I quite like a sugary version too, particularly when made with brioche.

    1. Oh yes, this would be wonderful with brioche. Mmmmmmmmm!

  24. I have to say I don't use sugar or salt... My eggy bread is just milk and egg. Is that even stranger?
