Now it's time to focus on content. If you ever hit a wall and can't think what to blog next or if you just want to keep your content varied, then this is the post for you.
Taken by Urvashi Roe, The Botanical Baker, this was one of the most practical and helpful labs.
Before Urvashi went through the types of content, we were asked to think about why we blog. Here is what I wrote:
- Recipe storage (my blog is where I try out and store my recipes)
- Business (my blog posts sometimes lead to work for other websites or brands)
- To connect (I love connecting with my readers, many of whom are now good friends)

And now for some tips:
- Make sure your content fits well with your objectives.
- Make it varied and interesting for your readers.
- Infographics are visual and popular. Try adding them to a post.
- Tag the infographic with the relevant search tags that will send readers to your post.
- Check out gifographics too, they are the new animated infographics.

Quite eye-catching, isn't it?
Posts that will get attention:
- How to guides
- Rant posts (don't do too many of these, but they are good once in a while)
- Lists
84% of posts with data are shared!
Urvashi had a great way of organising her content for the month and something I would seriously recommend. She buys a blank calendar and marks up all the interesting dates that might pull a lot of traffic. Dates like Valentines Day, Nutella Day, Wimbledon......... You get the idea. Then all you need to do is scribble on some ideas. Use the calendar to space out your posts and see at a glance what you have coming up and how balanced your posts are. Another great tip from Urvashi was to write the seasonal produce available each month at the bottom of the calendar.
Another tip is to look back at last year and see what was popular. Do another post on the same
theme. If it was popular before, chances are it will be popular again.
Also check out this Periodic Table of Content Marketing. Rather interesting!

This info is so useful... Love the way you have presented it.
ReplyDeleteThanks Supriya :)
DeleteThank you so much for the write up. I'm so glad you found a few tips and takeaways from the session. Was great to meet everyone and just focus on the blog for three days too.
ReplyDeleteIt was a good session Urvashi, you gave me lots of ideas.
Delete> Quite eye-catching, isn't it?
ReplyDeleteMajorly annoying is what I'd call it. The presence of animated GIFs is the main reason I use Ad Block Plus. If it became common in blog posts I'd stop reading that blog.
You sound very grumpy this morning Mike. I have to disagree. But I do think it depends on the content. If it is relevant data, then it is a different way of presenting it. If it's just advertising for a brand with no relevance or information, then it is just annoying. I do however think it should be used sparingly. It may just be overstimulating for some people as we all take in visuals differently. Interesting. Lets see what other people think.
DeleteSome great tips here! Scheduling and planning is something I am not very good at. I have gotten a lot better at it, but there is room for improvement. I have a whole word document full of post ideas and recipes, but I need to organise them more.
ReplyDeleteOh I could improve so, so much! I really.could. I tend to carry it all around n my head. Not the best plan.
DeleteThat's a great post Jac, especially as I didn't make it along to that talk on Friday!!! I aspire to be this organised... you've also reminded me I really must get into Tumblr...
ReplyDeleteI don't do much with my tumblr, just send instagram photos in that direction. Note to self, must try harder!
DeleteSuper round-up of Urvashi's obviously very pro talk. I am loving the calendar idea so much. I don't know about anyone else but I can't cope with gifographics. Must be my age! And auto-correct hates that word ;-) PS Thanks for linking to my coconut bacon recipe. Very kind, Miss Jac x
ReplyDeleteIt's a great idea. Oh well the gifographics may need to go then, lol!
DeleteThis session sounded super interesting - and a lot of bloggers have been raving about it. Sad I had to miss it due to the session in the main hall. Thanks for this recap post Jac - hope will be very useful for me to try and put some order in what I do (there is none and never has been to date - oops!)
ReplyDeleteHmmmm, I am a bit like you, I do it all on a wing and a prayer with a little help from my task manager in google mail. I got a new big notebook this week to start writing it all down.
DeleteI still regret not subscribing in time for this workshop but luckily, your post is a great roundup. Great tips from a lovely lady; thanks for sharing! :)
