I’ve been excited to try out some products from the new Holland and Barrett Free From website.
They've developed a whole new Free From website, which is much easier to use. I can find
products that are suitable for vegetarians and vegans, without searching for that elusive ingredient list on each prodcut. A few clicks. Whizz Bang Pow! And I have a comprehensive list of products
suitable for my family.
Here are a
few of the products I’ve been enjoying:
ChocChick Organic Raw Cacao Powder 250g (£7.99)
Organic and minimally processed Cacao powder from Ecuador.
Cacao is a great source of antioxidants, magnesium and iron, so it’s a great
addition to our morning smoothies.
I mostly make green smoothies in the morning
and I’ve been adding a few spoonfuls of this cacao to make them more luxurious
and to add to the nutritional value. The flavour is amazing.
Linwoods Milled Organic Flaxseed 425g (£5.99)
I use flaxseeds or
linseeds as they are also known a lot. I add a heaped teaspoon to my little
boy’s porridge in the morning. I blend it into smoothies and make flax eggs
from it.
What are flax eggs?
Well, when you’re baking vegan (dairy free) cakes
you need something to replace the egg as a binder. I grind 1 tbsp of flaxseeds
and mix it with 3 tbsp of water, then pop it in the fridge for half an hour
until it becomes gloopy. This replaces 1 egg.
Eat Real Lentil Chips Chilli Lemon 40g (79p)
Sometimes you just crave a snack and I’ve been enjoying these lentil crisps. They are perfect for movie night. They have a good crunch, but are melt in the mouth tasty. Spicy with the tang of lemon.
One bag is sometimes just not enough.

Granovita Ready Spready Pate Mushroom 200g (£2.69)
I’m a sucker for anything with mushrooms and I’ve been really enjoying this mushroom pate from the free from range. It has a good savoury mushroom flavour and spreads well from the tube. I love it on toast, but it would be great on oatcakes too.
Mr Organic Veg A'more Tofu Pasta Sauce 350g (£2.49)
I love the Mr Organic range. They’re great store cupboard basics and taste great. The pasta sauces are particularly tasty and they do a really good dairy free pesto too. This is our favourite pasta sauce with added protein from the tofu. It’s perfect for busy weeknights.
Clearspring Organic Japanese Tofu 300g (£1.85)
Clearspring are another high quality brand I’m pleased to see in Holland and Barrett. I’ve been pressing this tofu in clean tea towel to remove the moisture, then coating slices of it in spiced breadcrumbs and frying with just a spray of oil for a great veggie alternative to fish fingers. Kids love them.

I’ve been adding this Worcester sauce to my veggie shepherds pie to give it a really good flavour. Regular Worcester Sauce is made with anchovies, so it’s not suitable for vegetarians, but this sauce is perfect for adding to stews and sauces for that extra kick of flavour.
Raw Health Organic Cacao Brazilnut Bliss 170g (£4.49)
Nutella isn’t suitable for vegans, so I’ve been looking for a good alternative for a while. This one is made with brazil nuts instead of hazelnuts, but it still has a good nutty flavour and is rich with chocolate. It’s been a hit with my husband, whose vegan and was looking at the Nutella longingly.

One of the things I really missed as a vegetarian was marshmallows. I was forever picking up bags and scanning the list of ingredients hoping they wouldn’t contain gelatin, but they invariably did. Holland and Barrett now stock Freedom Mallows, which are much smaller than standard marshmallows but have the same sweet, foamy deliciousness.

Goody Good Stuff Strawberry & Cream 100g
The other thing I missed when I turned vegetarian 25 years ago was jelly sweeties. Give me jelly sweeties over chocolate any day. These little orbs of strawberry and cream are one of my favourites. They have a fruity flavour on one side and a milky flavour on the other and just the right amount of chew.
I hope I’ve inspired you to try some of my favourites from the Free From range.

ReplyDeleteI know they are rather good.
DeleteOoh, marshmallow subs! It really is hard to find good vegetarian substitutes. I still love my Peppa Pig veggie jellies, but those strawberry and cream ones look quite tasty!

DeleteSome goodies here, bet they tasted lovely and guilt free!
ReplyDeleteYes, it's a good selection Heidi.
DeleteWe have a branch on our local high street. I pop in when they have a 2 for 1 offer. They briefly stocked a fresh coconut milk I loved but then stopped and when I asked after it, said that branch was never meant to have stocked it in the first place. Sad face.
ReplyDeleteThey do great offers like that. I've saved a fortune that way. Shame about the coconut milk. Is it available from their website maybe?
DeleteOh those lentil chips sound right up my street.
ReplyDeleteOh boy they are good Bintu!
