50 BEST Plant-Based Puff Pastry Recipes for Vegans

I don't know about you, but I love puff pastry.

All golden brown with flaky layers, the perfect pie crust.

I learned how to make traditional puff pastry from scratch at school with my very strict and old-fashioned cookery teacher. It seemed to take hours to make.

All the careful folding and then more folding.

She watched our every move like a hawk. We didn't dare make a mistake.

Although I do remember a dish hitting the floor once. I think it was an apple crumble. She was not happy!

ready rolled puff pastry.

Store-bought puff pastry sheets

These days, I buy ready-made puff pastry from the supermarket.

Mostly I buy a ready-rolled sheet of puff pastry.

It's a godsend for lazy busy mums and such good quality too.

Just take it out of the fridge a few minutes before you need it and gently unroll it.

It even comes on greaseproof paper (parchment paper) you can work on and then transfer it onto a baking tray, so you don't have to flour or grease your baking sheet to prevent it from sticking.

Such an excellent and good quality product.

There's no need to brandish your rolling pin and no need for unevenly rolled pastry.

Much neater than the homemade version, unless you are a whizz at rolling puff pastry.

Is puff pastry suitable for vegans?

Thankfully a lot of the packages of puff pastry and shortcrust pastry available in the shops and grocery stores these days is suitable for vegans.

From the popular brands like Jus Rol to supermarket own brands, most of them are accidentally dairy-free pastry and still buttery pastry with a flaky texture, just as good as the non-vegan pastry.

Avoid those that say all butter and check on the back for the ingredients, just to make sure it's suitable.

I buy Tesco or Jus Rol which is suitable for vegans and available in a block or ready rolled sheets of pastry.

What about shortcrust pastry, is it vegan?

Once again Jus Rol come to the rescue with vegan shortcrust pastry, which is great for making quick pasties, homemade pop tarts, fruit and savoury pies.

Shortcrust pastry is very easy to make, but it is handy to have a packet of ready-made shortcrust pastry in the fridge for quick meals.

The eagle eyed among you will spot that I've included one recipe using shortcrust pastry.

It's a good one, so I decided to include it.

It could be made with puff, but wouldn't be easy to hold, so bookmark or pin it for next time you buy a block of vegan shortcrust pastry.

See if you can spot it.

Is gluten-free pastry any good?

Gluten-free puff pastry has improved so much.

A lot of my readers use it for my recipes with good results, so go ahead and use it for these recipes if you are on a gluten-free diet.

What about rough puff pastry?

Rough puff pastry is an easier version of homemade puff pastry.

There are lots of vegan recipes for this flaky pastry.

Try this easy recipe for homemade ruff puff pastry from The Comfort of My Bowl if you want to make your own.

  2. Some really lovely ideas there Jac, need to bookmark lots of these. The first time I did 'Veganuary' I didn't realise shop-bought puff pastry was vegan until the last few days of the month, and it was such a revelation! Thanks for including my Bombay Potato Bites.

  4. I'm intrigued as to how puff pastry can be vegan? Isn't there butter in it? Admittedly I've never perused the ingredients on ready mad stuff. Great selection of ideas whether you're vegan on not.

    1. Same as flapjacks Claire. Have a look next time you pick up a packet of jus-rol. Only homemade tends to have butter in it and yes fab recipes.

  5. This is a great post and a big reminder to myself to get some puff pastry next time i'm at the shops. I haven't used it over the summer much at all, but it's such a staple for quick term-time after-school suppers and desserts. Thanks!
