Your cake sounds great. I will remember that as a standby although I am not a fan of boxed cake mix, I prefer fresh imgredients, but great if you are travelling & don't have everything you need. No baked beans? You should have filled your case with them!!Jacqueline Meldrumhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05748535381400208316noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1082975144654323238.post-83633379852594200132017-05-19T08:07:36.173+01:002017-05-19T08:07:36.173+01:00I had some of those Linda McCartney sossies and th...I had some of those Linda McCartney sossies and the Cauldron falafels a couple of weeks ago when we were visiting the famalam in Blighty - they're really not at all bad, are they? My mother-out-law was quite taken aback when I said I was going to have a sossie sandwich for dinner one evening but I tell you, I loved it! I just don't eat that kind of thing as a rule, so it was such a treat!

Have you tried the Fry's Slicing Sausage (might be called polony now)? That was one of my staples when I first went vegan in 2006. Not had it for yonks but I remember it being super-deelish! It's a shame it only seems to be available in places like Holland and Barrett, and not supermarkets in general.

I was really disappointed at the lack of vegan options in the four supermarkets we visited the other week (3 x Tesco, 1 x Waitrose) - so many people had told me about all the great vegan stuff on offer, and while at home I cook everything from scratch, I wasn't in a position to do so in Britain, so thought it would be a great opportunity to sample some of the supermarket finds my chums had been raving about. All I can say is that the people of Margate, Northampton, and Royston are omnivorous heathens! LOLOL! There really was so little choice. I imagine it's much better in more cosmopolitan areas though.

That said, Tesco's fruit teacakes are so yummy.... unlike their vegan cheese, which is beyond gross! Not one of the branches I visited had any Violife either (which isn't great IMO but the smoked is tolerable on pizza and quesadillas!).

I did of course, buy a large pack of Bourbons - it would have been rude not to! And I stocked up on Marmite, Biscoff, HP Sauce, and nooch too. Totally forgot to get any Baked Beans though - what kind of numpty goes to Britain, and doesn't get beans? #facepalm

Also, since I needed to make a cake, and didn't have any of my usual ingredients with me, I bought a Betty Crocker Devil's Food Cake mix from Tesco (yep, there's a first time for everything), and made it up with a can of Coke Zero.

Split the mix between two sponge tins, then when cooked and cooled, spread a layer of raspberry jam over one sponge, and some of that Betty chocolate choc fudge frosting on the other. Plonked the two together, and covered the top in more of said frosting.

Not the most sophisticated cake I've ever made but it was pretty amazing! I made it on the Wednesday afternoon, and it got finished on the following Monday - it was still as moist as it was on day 1, and everyone who had some loved it too. A total win! I'd definitely do that again!

I do feel that Britain has a way to go to catch up with the rest of mainland Europe but it looks like it's getting there, and certainly in the last few years, it's come along in leaps and bounds. I know that some people seem to find it objectionable that certain folks see veganism as a fashionable bandwagon to jump onto (like being gluten-free when you don't have to be) but fashion makes things mainstream, which means that manufacturers and retailers sit up and take notice. And that's brilliant news for vegans, vegetarians, animals, and the planet, right?!

Great post, Jac! xxNico @ yumsomehttp://www.yumsome.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1082975144654323238.post-88306053354616591012017-05-16T22:02:34.028+01:002017-05-16T22:02:34.028+01:00I am so glad you found this guide helpful Hannah a...I am so glad you found this guide helpful Hannah and I hope you try some of the products out :)Jacqueline Meldrumhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05748535381400208316noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1082975144654323238.post-845084935390010652017-05-16T12:43:13.768+01:002017-05-16T12:43:13.768+01:00This is such a handy guide, I had no idea so many ...This is such a handy guide, I had no idea so many of these products were vegan. However I have not managed to find local vegan yoghurt. I am surprised that Fry's chocolate is vegan - one of E's favourites.
