 These are the best vegan black bean burgers I've tried. Super simple to make. They are made with peanuts and oats, (you can swap peanuts for another type of nut).

Best Vegan Black Bean Burgers with Oats & Peanuts


Homemade bean burgers are always much nicer than shop-bought burgers, but these have to be the best vegan bean burgers I've tried in a while.

They are quick and simple to make, full of healthy ingredients and they taste great.

Because they are homemade, you can make them as spicy as you like (or not, if you are a wuss like me).

I tend to add enough spice for flavour and a bit of warmth.



Quick Bean Burgers


These vegan bean burgers are super quick to make.

There's no pre-cooking of ingredients. All you need to do is use a food processor or blender to blend the ingredients together.

If you don't have a food processor or blender you could mash the ingredients with a potato masher, but the nuts, onion and garlic would have to be very finely chopped.

It only takes about 10 minutes to make the mixture and form them into patties, then a few minutes each side in a hot frying pan or griddle.


Shaping burgers


You can buy presses for making burgers, for a very uniform finish, but if you don't own a restaurant, is there any need?

I just take a scoop of the burger mixture, form it into a ball, then press into a patty shape between my palms (clean of course).

Wet hands do make this job easier.

Can you make them gluten-free?


It's super easy to make these black bean burgers gluten-free.

Just use gluten-free oats instead of regular oats.

It's as simple as that.


What you need to make vegan black bean burgers


Here are the simple ingredients you need to make these quick vegan burgers.

  • Black beans - I used canned beans, but you can soak and cook dried beans
  • Red onion - or white if you like
  • Garlic
  • Tomato puree
  • Peanut butter
  • Chilli powder - hot or mild
  • Paprika
  • Cumin
  • Salt & pepper
  • Peanuts - plain or salted nuts
  • Oats - porridge oats or rolled oats

Can you use other beans instead of black beans?



Yes, you can swap the beans for another type. I'm always in favour of using what you have.

Here are a few ideas.
  • Cannellini beans
  • Kidney beans
  • Haricot beans
  • Chickpeas
  • Pinto beans

Are canned or dried beans better?



Some people swear by dried beans and it's true they do work out much cheaper, but is there a difference in quality?

Dried beans have the benefit that they can be cooked longer until they are softer, but tinned beans are actually really good quality and great for most recipes.

They are also super convenient as they are ready to use immediately with no prep.

Burger toppings are a very personal thing. 

My favourite is the classic combo of mustard and ketchup, although this time I used tomato relish.

Here are a few ideas to change things up, when you make these vegan bean burgers.

Choose your selection wisely!

Burger Salad or Veg Toppings

  • Lettuce - shredded
  • Cucumber - sliced
  • Tomatoes - sliced
  • Spring onions - sliced
  • Bell pepper - sliced
  • Beetroot - raw grated or pickled sliced
  • Dill pickles - sliced
  • Mushrooms - sauteed and seasoned with pepper
  • Aubergine - sliced and grilled
  • Courgette - sliced and grilled

Burger sauces and spreads

  • Mayo - same again
  • Tomato ketchup - try making homemade chipotle ketchup
  • Tomato relish - my favourite
  • American mustard - the yellow stuff
  • Wholegrain mustard
  • Brown sauce - It's a British thing, if I said HP it would make even less sense
  • BBQ sauce
  • Vegan salad cream
  • Ranch dressing - try this easy homemade ranch dressing

Add that cheese!

  • Cream cheese - vegan of course
  • Vegan cheddar - melted
  • Smoked vegan cheese - melted
  • Garlic cheese - think vegan Boursin
  • Vegan mozzarella - melted

How long will these vegan black bean burgers keep?


Once you've made them into patties, you can store them in an airtight container, separated by non-stick baking paper for 3-4 days.

If you have leftover cooked burgers, keep them in the fridge and use them the next day in wraps or reheat them to serve how you like.


Can you freeze these dairy-free black bean burgers?



These black bean burgers with oats freeze really well.

Freeze them when they are shaped into bean patties before they are cooked.

You can freeze them in a freezer bag or tub separated by freezer-friendly non-stick baking paper, so they are easy to remove and separate.

They can then be cooked from frozen.

How to make the best vegan black bean burgers


A step-by-step photo guide followed by a full printable recipe, so your burgers will turn out perfectly every time.

Do feel free to add more spice or chilli if you like a bit of heat.


Making black bean burgers - step 1.

  • Add the drained, canned beans to a food processor, then add the onion, garlic and spices.
    • I did this in two batches as my food processor is small, but if you have a normal-sized blender or food processor you can do it all in one go.

  • Next add the tomato puree, peanut butter and nuts.
  • Season with salt and pepper.

  • Whizz until you have a rough paste.
    • it doesn't have to be too fine.
  • Spoon into a mixing bowl and add the oats and mix well.

  • Once it's started to come together, take dollops and roll them into balls, then flatten them into patties with your hands.
    • this is easier to do with wet hands.
  • The mixture will make between 3-4 burgers.
  • Fry in a hot pan or griddle pan with a little oil (use a small spray of oil if you are watching your calories or fat intake.
  • Cook for a few minutes on each side until they are well-browned and crisped a little on the outside.
  • Serve on lightly toasted burger buns with your favourite toppings.
  • Enjoy!

Best Vegan Black Bean Burgers with Oats & Peanuts

Ingredients

  • 235g (8 1/3 oz) black beans (400g/14 oz can of beans, drained)
  • 1 red onion (or half a large red onion), chopped into large pieces
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 2 tablespoons tomato puree
  • 1 tablespoon peanut butter
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons chilli powder (mild or hot)
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 pinch salt and pepper
  • 3 tablespoons peanuts (plain or salted)
  • 4 tablespoons oats (porridge oats or rolled oats)

Instructions

Notes

Tips

  • You may swap the peanuts with other nuts. Cashews, walnuts or brazil nuts would work well.
  • You may add more spice if you want heat.

Storing Burgers

  • Once you've made them into patties, you can store them in an airtight container, separated by non-stick baking paper for 3-4 days.
