Vegan Boursin Pasta with Cherry Tomatoes

We've all heard of the famous baked feta pasta dish that went viral on Tiktok.

Utterly delicious and it inspired me to create this creamy vegan Boursin pasta with cherry tomatoes.

Oh my, this pasta is just heavenly.

So creamy and it tastes fabulous.

Is vegan Boursin any good?

Vegan Boursin is pretty good.

vegan Boursin

It's not identical to the original, but it's creamy and has a good garlic flavour.

Because it's softer, it comes in a plastic tub instead of being wrapped in foil and in the cardboard box we are familiar with.

It's still a pretty good option for spreading on toast, a sandwich or crackers.

And of course, it's gorgeous in this pasta dish.

Can you bake vegan Boursin?

And now we get to the crux of the matter and the answer is no.

There are recipes out there that will tell you to just swap Boursin for vegan Boursin, but you can't do that.

They are different products and have to be treated differently.

But I'm here for you and have tested it for you. I will resist saying I have your back as I hate that phrase.

What happens if you bake vegan Boursin?

I tested vegan Boursin by popping some in the microwave and some in the oven.

Same results and it's not great!

what happens when you bake vegan boursin (turns rubbery)

Vegan Boursin doesn't melt when cooked, it shrivels up and turns to a rubbery texture.

Not what you want.

So if you are adding it to a dish, add it when it's out of the oven, air fryer or microwave.

Check out my step-by-step photos and printable recipe for this TikTok Boursin Pasta below to see the best way of adding it to a sauce for most luxurious sauce.

Which type of tomatoes are best for this dish?

Tomatoes of all shapes and sizes are delicious roasted, but for this dish, you want small tomatoes.

baby plum tomatoes

Cherry tomatoes or baby plum tomatoes are ideal.

They roast quickly and the skin comes off in smaller and thinner pieces, so can be left in the sauce.

Getting the most flavour from the tomatoes

Roasting tomatoes really brings out a rich sweet flavour and intensifies that tomato taste.

Add a few other ingredients in there and you have the perfect base for a tasty sauce.

They don't take long to roast either and you can roast them in the oven or in an air fryer.

What you need to make this creamy vegan pasta

Here are the simple ingredients you need to make this boursin cheese pasta.

creamy vegan pasta

  • Vegan Boursin - if you can't find vegan Boursin, you could use vegan cream cheese and mix in some garlic and herbs
  • Vegan Greek yoghurt - or vegan plain yoghurt
  • Olive oil
  • Cherry tomatoes - or baby plum tomatoes
  • Red onion
  • Oregano - dried herbs are fine
  • Chilli flakes - or fresh chilli
  • Salt & Pepper - to season
  • Pasta
  • Fresh basil - to serve (optional)

What else can you add to Boursin Pasta?

Thinking of what else could be added to this Boursin tomato pasta, I came up with these ideas.

  • Leeks - finely sliced instead of onion
  • Red pepper - finely sliced for extra flavour and texture
  • Courgette (zucchini) - slices roasted with the tomatoes
  • Aubergine (eggplant) - cubes or slices roasted with the tomatoes
  • Fresh herbs - not just to garnish, but a generous amount, much more than I added, chopped and tossed through the final pasta, basil or parsley would work well

Which pasta is best?

Most pasta shapes would work with this Boursin pasta sauce, but here are a few of my favourite options.

  1. Farfalle - bow tie pasta
  2. Fusilli - twisty pasta
  3. Conchiglie - shell pasta
  4. Spirali - spiral pasta
  5. Messicani - what I call belly button pasta

What else can you serve this sauce with?

This rich tomato sauce is so versatile.

Here are a few other ideas for serving it.

  1. Vegan haggis - serve as a sauce with vegan haggis or nut loaf
  2. Bruschetta sauce - serve on toasted sourdough or bloomers as a starter or canape
  3. Lasagne - serve the roasted tomato sauce as a lasagne sauce, add the creamy boursin right at the end
  4. Sausages - serve with vegan sausages, mashed potatoes and green veg
  5. Pizza - use as a pizza sauce, reserve the Boursin mixture and dollop on before serving
  6. Crusty bread - leave the cheese dolloped on top and scoop up with crusty bread or tortilla chips!
I'm sure you will come up with a few more tasty ideas.

Vegan Boursin Pasta with Cherry Tomatoes

Vegan Boursin Pasta with Cherry Tomatoes

Super easy and creamy vegan Boursin pasta with cherry tomatoes is the perfect quick family dinner that tastes totally luxurious.
Prep time: 10 MinCook time: 20 MinTotal time: 30 Min

Ingredients

  • 400g (14 oz) farfalle (bow tie) pasta
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 500g (3 cups) cherry tomatoes (or other small tomatoes)
  • 1/2 red onion, peeled, halved and finely sliced
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon chilli flakes (more if you like, I added enough for warmth, not heat)
  • a pinch of salt & pepper
  • 130g (4.5 oz) vegan Boursin (or vegan cream cheese mixed with garlic and fresh herbs)
  • 1 tablespoon vegan plain yoghurt (or Greek yoghurt)
  • 1 handful of fresh basil

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 200c/180c fan/400f/ gas mark 6 (or use your air fryer), then boil a large pot of well-salted water for your pasta.
  2. Add the tomatoes, onion, herbs, spices, salt and pepper and olive oil to an oven dish and mix well.
  3. Pop the dish in the oven (or air fryer) for 20-25 minutes until cooked and soft. It will cook quicker in an air fryer.
  4. Pop your pasta in the boiling water to cook after the tomatoes have been cooking for about 10 minutes.
  5. While that's all cooking tip the Boursin into a bowl and mash until soft, then add the yoghurt and mix well, which will give you a silky and creamy cheese to add to your sauce.
  6. Once the tomatoes are cooked, mash them well (prick first so they don't squirt you with juice) to make a sauce, then add the creamy cheese and fresh basil and mix well.
  7. Once the pasta is cooked, drain it well, shaking off as much water as possible, then mix the sauce through the pasta in your pot.
  8. Serve and enjoy!

Notes

  • If you can't find vegan Boursin, mix vegan cream cheese with crushed garlic (or garlic powder) and herbs (fresh or dried) instead.
  • You can add more chilli for heat (flakes, powder or fresh chilli). I just added enough for warmth and to boost the flavour.
  • Shell, spiral or twisty pasta work well instead of farfalle (bow-tie pasta).
  • If you are roasting the tomatoes in the air fryer, find an oven dish that fits and keep an eye on them as they will cook quicker.
  • Leftover pasta is great for lunch.
  • This sauce can be used in other dishes too. With sausages, mashed potatoes and green veg, as a sauce for pizza or lasasgne or as a bruschetta sauce.

    1. I thought it best after seeing people say you could use vegan boursin as a straight swap for boursin. Knowing vegan cheese I was very sceptical.
