Slow Cooker Mulled Wine with Orange Liqueur

A simple recipe for mulled wine made in a the slow cooker and kept warm for your guests or warmed in a pot (if you don't have a slow cooker). The perfect winter warmer.

Slow Cooker Mulled Wine with Orange Liqueur

Mulled Vine

Mulled wine, the best you ever tasted!

I definitely have the Halloween picture book Pumpkin Soup by Helen Cooper going through my head. I read it to a nursery this week and it starts with "Pumpkin soup, the best you've ever tasted!" and I said it exactly the same way.

This is the time of year to cook squash and make hot spiced drinks. That's only thing I like about this time of year actually. I hate the dark and the damp, but I do love autumnal food and drink.

Hot spiced drinks like this slow cooked mulled wine can take you happily from Autumn and into Winter.

Making Mulled Wine

Slow Cooker Mulled Wine

I made this spicy hot drink in my slow cooker, which is a great idea if you have guests coming around. You can walk away from it and get on with other things while it heats, then the 'keep warm' feature will keep the mulled wine at the right temperature. Place it on a table with a soup ladle so guests can fill their own glasses or mugs.

Stove-Top Mulled Wine

Oh how American of me, I was going to say cooker top, but stove-top sounded much better. Anyway you know what I mean. You can also heat your mulled wine in a pan on the cooker and just ladle it out for your guests. Heat it gently, you don't want to bring it to the boil.

Mulled Wine Spices

I added star anise, cloves and cinnamon sticks to my slow cooker mulled wine, but you could use your own favourite spices.

What spices can you use in mulled wine?

Choose a selection from this list, but no more than 3 or 4.

  1. Star anise
  2. Cloves
  3. Cinnamon sticks
  4. Nutmeg
  5. Vanilla
  6. Allspice
  7. Cardamom
  8. Ginger
  9. Bay leaves
  10. Chilli

What else can you add to mulled wine?

Again just choose one or two fruity extras and only one alcoholic extra, so you don't confuse and muddy the flavours. Try to keep it simple.

  1. Orange peel
  2. Orange slices
  3. Orange juice
  4. Lemon peel
  5. Orange Liqueur
  6. Brandy
  7. Gin

How to sweeten mulled wine?

Sweetening the wine is optional. If you are sweetening it, you don't need to add a lot. Here are a few sweeteners you can use:

  1. Sugar
  2. Brown sugar
  3. Maple syrup
  4. Honey
  5. Agave Nectar

Crock-Pot Dump Recipe

This is a dump recipe. Often you will read about dump dinners, well this is a dump drink. When the phrase dump is used it means you just throw or dump all the ingredients in.

For this recipe all the ingredients are thrown into the crockpot, it's switched on to slow cook and that's it, you can walk away until it's ready.

A no-fuss recipe.

Slow cooker digital panel set at low cook for 2 hours

Slow cook and warm function

I slow cooked my mulled wine gently on low for 2 hours. You could cook it for less than this, but the 2 hours really gives the flavours time to develop.

My slow cooker will move from slow cooking to warming function at the end of the cook time. Check to see if your slow cooker or crock-pot will do this. If not either set the time so you will be serving it while it is still slow cooking or keep the lid on, which will keep it warm for quite a while.

Turci Seasoning Sprays

Turci Seasoning Sprays

I used dried spices in my recipe but this week I was sent some new seasoning sprays to try and I thought I would share them with you.

These new sprays are 100% cold-pressed liquid herb sprays which are available in basil, garlic, chilli and oregano. Each bottle has 200 sprays and only 2 calories per spray. You don't have to store them in the fridge once opened and they are great for adding to pasta sauce, soup, stew and chilli.

Turci Seasoning Sprays are available in the herbs and seasoning aisle in Tesco and online at Ocado.co.uk for £2 per bottle.

  10. This sounds delicious - I don't have a slow cooker but love the idea of keeping it warm this way. I am quite partial to cointreau in my mulled wine too but not sure if I have any left in my cupboard as it is some time since I have sought it out.

  12. Why have I not made mulled wine in my slow cooker before?! I've clearly been missing a trick. Will have to give this a go.

  13. Your mulled wine sounds glorious. I can't usually drink wine as it give me a terrible hangover the next day but every Christmas I seem to be able to drink mulled wine with no ill effect so I might just have to try this! So much nice to have freshly made rather than from a bottle.

  14. Ooh I love the idea of making this in your slow cooker, especially if you're cooking dinner for guests at the same time - my hob gets so overcrowded! The smell must be amazing too!
