Homemade Greek Loaded Fries with Vegan Feta Cheese

Homemade dirty fries are such a fun dinner that's packed with flavour.

My latest dirty fries are these Greek-loaded fries, which feature the flavours of the Mediterranean and are particularly tasty.

Many of you loved my Mexican-inspired fajita fries, so I hope you'll try these next.

They are super easy to make and so delicious!

Always a popular choice!

What are dirty fries?

Dirty fries, or loaded fries as they are also known, are crispy fries or chips, as we call them in the UK, coated in flavour-packed spices and herbs, cooked alongside some tasty toppings.

They are so much nicer and more interesting than regular fries.

These Greek dirty fries are tossed in a fresh Greek seasoning inspired by the aromatic flavours of Greece and topped with some favourites from a Greek salad.

The finishing touch is crumbled salty feta cheese (I use dairy-free) and a creamy feta dressing with a bit of zing.

10 Tips for the best loaded fries

Cook them right and you'll go back to them again and again, so here are my tips to have the best dirty fries.

  1. Make sure you preheat your oven.
  2. Coat your fries in a tasty spice or herb mix.
  3. Season them well with salt and pepper.
  4. Use a large baking tray (sheet pan) or even two, you want them to be in a single layer to crisp up.
  5. Think about when to add the other ingredients; some ingredients cook quickly, so they should be added further into the cooking time.
  6. Toss the fries during cooking, so they get a chance to crisp up evenly.
  7. Ovens vary, so you may need to cook them longer than the recipe says (let the crispness of the chips guide you), but if your oven cooks on the hot side, turn the heat down a little.
  8. Adding cheese is optional, but tasty. Vegan halloumi (or cheddar) can be added near the end of the cook time, but feta is good added after cooking.
  9. Finish them with a drizzle of a tasty sauce or dressing.
  10. Think about what you're serving them with, are they a side or the star of the show (ideas below).

Air fryer or oven?

These Greek-style fries can be cooked in an air fryer or oven.

The times may vary, but both are good options.

Do make sure you toss or turn the fries (and other ingredients) and cook until the cooked fries are golden brown at the edges and crispy.

What you need to make Greek loaded fries

Here are the simple ingredients you need to make these super tasty loaded Greek fries.

I use frozen chips or fries for convenience and quickness. You could make fries from scratch, but you would have to adjust the timings.

  • Frozen chips  - or frozen French fries
  • Red onion - I think red onion works better, but you could use white onion
  • Olive oil - or extra virgin olive oil (EVOO)
  • Lemon zest - freshly grated
  • Oregano - I used dried
  • Dried parsley - dried works better in a season blend
  • Garlic powder  - or granules
  • Salt & black pepper
  • Cherry tomatoes - or other mini tomatoes
  • Olives - I like a mix of pitted black olives and green olives, but if you don't like them, skip them
  • Vegan feta - to serve
  • Fresh parsley - to add for a pop of fresh flavour when serving
  • Dressing - choose from one below

Variations

If you are going for full-on Greek salad flavours, you could cook some strips of green bell pepper along with the fries etc.

And adding half moons of cucumber before serving is quite nice for crunch, as well as that pleasing contrast of hot and cold flavours.

I do like to cut my cucumber chunk in half, then scoop out the wet seeds with a teaspoon (just scrape it down the centre), before slicing.

It leaves you with crisp cucumber and none of the wetness.

Finish the fries with a creamy dressing

Once the fries are out of the oven, I top them with crumbled feta cheese and fresh herbs, but the finishing touch that makes them so special is a drizzle of creamy dressing.

I like to use a creamy feta dressing with a zing of lemon, but here are a few options.

Easy homemade salad dressing

  1. Creamy feta cheese dressing - made with dairy-free feta.
  2. Tahini dressing - this also works well with the Greek flavours.
  3. Ranch dressing - let's face it, it's good on everything!
You can of course, use shop-bought salad dressing or even Greek yoghurt (plant-based Greek yoghurt) mixed with fresh herbs, but these are all super quick and easy to make and taste delicious on homemade fries.

What to serve on the side

If you're serving these Greek-style fries as the ultimate side dish, then you're sorted.

However, if they are the star of the show, you may want to serve something with them and I have a few ideas for you.

  • Green salad -  with a some of the dressing drizzled over it
  • Crisped up falafel - I sometimes buy ready-made falafel, then crisp them up in the air fryer or oven, it improves them so much
  • Vegetable fingers - a vegetable version of fish fingers with a crispy coating
  • Chickpea & coriander (cilantro) burgers - these are so good
  • Crispy spinach and carrot bites - healthy bites made to cook in the air fryer from Strong Roots
  • Pea & lemon bites - from Strong Roots too (check the freezer aisle in your local supermarket for these or something similar)
