This healthy chocolate mousse is super easy to make in a blender and it contains no added sugar or fat. The chocolate chips are optional but a nice touch.

Healthy Chocolate Mousse. That can't be right?

It can be the way I make it. 

Only three ingredients.

A rich indulgent chocolate mousse that's good for you. 

I added some dark chocolate chips, but you could leave those out if you like.

This luxurious mousse is made in minutes, then you just pour it into glasses and pop it in the fridge to chill until you're ready to serve it.

What do you need to make this mousse?


As I already said this creamy chocolate mousse is made with just three ingredients.

  1. Bananas
  2. Tofu
  3. Cocoa powder
You can also add dark chocolate chips as I did or skip them. 

A few sprinkles on top looks rather nice too or a dollop of vegan squirty cream

Which type of tofu do you make chocolate mousse with?


To make chocolate mousse you want to pick up a pack of silken tofu.

Silken tofu is soft and creamy, so it's perfect to add to sauces or when you are making dessert.

You can also add it to soups to make them creamy and to add some protein.

Why do you add bananas to this chocolate mousse?



The bananas are one of the main ingredients in this mousse.

They are a bit of flavour, although you mostly taste chocolate. The main benefit of adding bananas is to add sweetness without adding sugar.

They are also very good for you and add an extra nutritional boost to this dessert.

Adding cocoa gives a rich chocolate flavour to this mousse.

Use a good quality dark cocoa and make sure it's suitable for vegans.

Be careful when buying chocolate chips



If you are vegan, do be careful when buying chocolate chips.

So many supermarket own-brand chocolate chips have milk in them, even the dark chocolate chips you might think would be ok.

Vegetarian?  Then it doesn't really matter.

Chocolate chips are totally optional but I think it's rather nice to add them.

I call this blender chocolate mousse, but you could make it in a food processor.

It's such a quick dessert to make.

Just throw all the ingredients into a blender and whizz up until smooth, then pour into dessert bowls or glasses and pop it in the fridge to set with any toppings you fancy adding.

Here are a few topping ideas for chocolate mousse.  

Choose one or two or just leave it plain.

  1. Chocolate chips
  2. Grated chocolate
  3. Vegan squirty cream
  4. Fresh raspberries
  5. Fresh strawberries
  6. Banana slices
  7. Popping candy
  8. Sprinkles

You may have scoffed when I called this healthy chocolate mousse, but it really is. 

It's low in calories and saturated fat, it includes good source of dietary fibre and protein and it includes calcium, iron and protein.

Perfect if you are watching your weight or following the 5:2 diet.

Healthy Chocolate Mousse (vegan)

Healthy Chocolate Mousse (vegan)

A luxurious chocolate mousse that is made in seconds. It's low in fat and calories as well as full of good stuff. This will becomes your go-to quick dessert and there's no guilt attached.
Prep time: 5 MinTotal time: 5 Min

Ingredients

  • 290g (10 oz) silken tofu
  • 2 large bananas
  • 2 heaped tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 50g (1/2 cup) dark chocolate chips (optional)

Instructions

  1. Slice a few pieces of banana and set them aside for decoration along with a few chocolate chips (if adding them).
  2. Remove the liquid from the tofu pack (you don't need it) then place the tofu, the rest of the banana and the cocoa into the jug of a blender (or food processor). You could even use a stick blender in a jug, but you should mash the banana first.
  3. Whizz until smooth, then add the chocolate chips if you are adding them and mix in.
  4. Pour the mousse into three short glasses or dessert bowls and top with slices of banana and a few chocolate chips. Chill until ready to serve. It will set and thicken.
  5. Enjoy!

Notes:

  • Make sure you use silken tofu and not standard tofu even if it says it is soft. Silken is creamy and perfect for a smooth dessert.
  • This is a great dessert for children. It's chocolately and they will love it, while you know you are giving them a healthy dessert with no added sugar or fat.

  1. I think that silken tofu is one of the most under-appreciated ingredients in the kitchen! It makes the most delicious desserts, and your chocolate mousse is a great example! Also, great to see M&S offering wider variety of vegan products!

  2. I have never even heard of silken tofu but this chocolate mousse sounds wonderful and like a treat I could totally have at night when my sweettooth takes over without destroying my hard work of exercise during the day! It sounds really chocolatey!

    1. It's a great product for desserts, dips and sauces if you want a creamy finish. It has a milky flavour so it really is just for adding that texture, not for adding flavour.

  8. I love chocolate mousse 😍 . Never tried it with silken tofu yet, I usually take avocado ( which makes it less figure friendly ;-)). Love to try your recipe Jacquelne.

  9. The first time I used silken tofu was in the early '80s; I saw it in a health food shop, and was intrigued. I'd been eating it in Asian restaurants since I was a child but had never cooked with it. The carton had a recipe for chocolate pudding on it, so I thought I'd makeit, and bought all the ingredients. Except it wasn't chocolate pudding, it was carob, and instead of sugar it used Splenda (or something similar). Not only was the 'chocolate' completely fraudulent, the sugar sub also left a disgustingly bitter after taste. It was a complete disaster!

    I never thought I'd ever come across anything as revolting, but a few years ago, a friend was doing Slimming World, and told me the leader suggested mixing a sachet of Chocolate Mint Hi-Lights (y'know, the low-cal hot choc drink) with a small tub of Greek yoghurt. Not sure who felt more ill, me or my friend!

    Your chocolate mousse however, looks and sounds completely delicious... with zero need for a barf bag! ;-) xx

  10. I didn't realise that M&S were now selling tofu, so thanks for the heads up. I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for it next time I'm there.

    I love making chocolate mousse with silken tofu too. I never got into the avocado mousse thing as I can always detect the avocado which I find a bit off putting. I do love avocado, just not in my sweets!

    I don't think I can find silked tofu at my area for now :( I hope there's not any much difference about how delish it is in this recipe!!
